Atkins Rail - Kiosk Server SolutionMost recently, Atkins Rail placed an order with Omnicom Engineering Limited for the supply of a "stand-alone" server solution to support the company's rail business operations in Croydon. The system, referred to by Atkins Rail as the "OmniSurveyor3D® Kiosk", enables its users to quickly access, view, position and measure from multi-camera imagery for the 7,500 kilometres of track network that comprise the Southern and Anglia Regions. All image data for the two regions is maintained in an Oracle®10g database. For this intial Atkins Rail Kiosk system, Oracle® standard is deployed. This is an entry level relational data system. The Client server edition of OmniSurveyor3D® is effectively a web application with a desktop client. Images are requested from a web application server using the HTTP 1.1 protocol. The application server retrieves survey information from the database server and delivers these to a desktop client. HTTP is also used to transmit information back to the database via the application server. The "kiosk" will act intially as a "proof of concept" platform. The primary aim is to enable Atkins Rail to measure, evaluate and demonstrate the potential cost benefits which can be realised across their nationwide rail operations. They are confident that by utilising the OmniSurveyor3D® system as a safe and efficient alternative to often costly site surveys and track excursions, the results will lead to great improvements in overall productivity and employee safety. |
